Poem: The cannon was fired! The dogs barked!

Boom! The cannon was fired! The dogs barked!
The men and women stood around,
Stilled and pledged to make no sound,
A sombre silence there to tell,
Today they remembered the men who fell.

That booming, awful deafening blast,
Sent their minds back to the past,
To those who fought, bled and died,
To bring the hope of peace at last.
But they felt no need to be afraid,
Since freedom’s price was duly paid,
So safe they were on this bitter cold morning,
To give thanks to the wounded and the dead.

Meanwhile, the dogs barked!

They had stood there, bored and unaware,
Knowing not why so many did care,
Not hearing the words of prayer and psalm,
That veiled the truth in noble charm,
And wrote a chapter of praise and glory,
That those honoured couldn’t know would conclude their story.
Then the cannon’s thunder pierced the air,
Now they knew they had to care,
To call to each other and determine the threat,
Wondering if they should ever forget.
It wasn’t possible for them to see,
This was planned, ordained and meant to be,
That there they faced no menacing foe,
And to home and safety they’d soon go.
They didn’t know events had a logical law,
In that moment, it was they who knew the terror of war.
Boom! The cannon was fired! The dogs barked!
